HISTORY
Jens and Rise Madsen were the first long-term settlers of the area we know today as Bluffdale. A history published on the city’s official website says, “They homesteaded on the east side of the Jordan River in 1862. Chris Petersen and his family moved in with them the same year. Timothy Gilbert was the next to arrive and settled a short distance below them on the west
side of the river. John and Robert Spencer arrived in 1868.”
Water can be a real issue in the desert and the desert community of Bluffdale was not exempt. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members were among the first non-native settlers to arrive in the valley. The industrious settlers created a complex system of canals to carry water to families and their farms. Once the canal was finished, more people began to arrive. A system of seven canals was built in Bluffdale, and in 1874, William Augustia Turner moved his family to what is now known as the Jordan Narrows. According to the city history, he worked as a watchman over the dams built for the Salt Lake County Canal System. The community flourished from there! Bluffdale officially became a city in 1878.
