HISTORY

The land in present-day Midvale was enticing to early pioneer settlers. It was centrally-located in the Salt Lake Valley and it was located along the Jordan River. Most early settlers came here on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jehu and Sara Cox arrived from Missouri in 1848. They settled in the Midvale area and claimed a 40-acre parcel for their farm. When things got tense with the native Ute tribe, he donated 10 acres of his land to build a fort. The fort protected 26 homes. In the the 1850s, they began to build homes in the Midvale area.

The mining, smelting, coal, logging and other industries were booming. People from all walks of life met in the valley. Although many of them spoke different languages and came from many different cultures, they formed an unofficial union. For that reason, they named the fort, Union Fort.

Present-day Midvale became a bustling industrial site. Eventually the railroad made an appearance and industry grew even stronger. The city was finally incorporated in 1909. Today the population of this important community is 35,360.
