Public transportation is easy with TRAX stations, a healthy public bus system, and stops for FrontRunner. FrontRunner is a commuter train that runs from Ogden to Provo.

HISTORY

Utah has a cultural history steeped in traditions developed over decades by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly referred to as the Mormons). Religious diversity eventually found its way to Utah, but it was the Mormon pioneers that entered the valley through Emigration Canyon in July 1847 and declared the valley, “home.”

The industrious pioneers spread throughout the Salt Lake Valley to begin communities at the direction of Church leaders. Some settlers found their places across the Jordan River (southwest of Salt Lake City).

The Utah History Encyclopedia says Alexander Beckstead and his family were among the first to settle there in 1849. “Beckstead’s first home was in West Jordan, but he permanently moved his family to South Jordan in 1859.”

In an online article, the encyclopedia points out that many of the homes first built in South Jordan were dugouts carved under a hill near the river.

Like many Utah cities and towns, the most widely practiced religion in South Jordan is that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bestplaces.net demographics say 61.1 percent of residents are affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ. The next most widely practiced religion is Catholicism (9 percent).

South Jordan is the first city in the world to host two Mormon temples. They are named, Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple and the Jordan River Utah Temple.

Technically, the trail goes from the Great Salt Lake to the south side of Utah Lake. Each community through which it passes helps beautify the banks of the Jordan River. It is kind of poetic in that this trail peacefully connects communities, people with people, people with nature, animals with people, and people with themselves. The trail is about 40 miles long. It runs through South Jordan City from 9400 South to 10000 South. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Oquirrh Lake

Daybreak residents can take a deep breath, and take in a slow sunset over Oquirrh Lake. The large, manmade lake is a community amenity with trails and beaches. The lake covers 67 acres, but with beaches, docks, trails, picnic areas, and wetlands, it’s more like 137 acres. The distance around the lake is about 3.4 miles.

Anglers will find bass, catfish, and trout in Oquirrh Lake. Non-motorized aquatic sports like kayaking and sailing are popular. It’s an excellent place to watch wildlife. Homeowners in Daybreak have access to canoes, kayaks, row boats, stand-up paddle boards, and more.

Jordan School District oversees public education, K-12, in Bluffdale, Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan, and West Jordan. The town of Copperton and southwest portions of Unincorporated Salt Lake County are also included.
