Utah has a cultural history steeped in traditions developed over decades by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly referred to as the Mormons). Religious diversity eventually found its way to Utah, but it was the Mormon pioneers that entered the valley through Emigration Canyon in July 1847 and declared the valley, “home.”
The industrious pioneers spread throughout the Salt Lake Valley to begin communities at the direction of Church leaders. Some settlers found their places across the Jordan River (southwest of Salt Lake City).
The Utah History Encyclopedia says Alexander Beckstead and his family were among the first to settle there in 1849. “Beckstead’s first home was in West Jordan, but he permanently moved his family to South Jordan in 1859.”
In an online article, the encyclopedia points out that many of the homes first built in South Jordan were dugouts carved under a hill near the river.

South Jordan is the first city in the world to host two Mormon temples. They are named, Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple and the Jordan River Utah Temple.
“In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), a temple is a building dedicated to be a House of the Lord. Temples are considered by church members to be the most sacred structures on earth,” according to an article titled “Temple (LDS Church)” on Wikipedia.
